雖然這麼說有點對不起學生，但是百分之九十九聽到學生用 there have been 的用法都是錯誤的，大部分的人想說的是什麼地方有什麼東西或想表示存在時應該多半是 there is / there are 或者是過去式 there was / there were 的句型才對 ，但是又記得英文的有是 has / have ，所以就混在一起用，然後就錯了，暈倒。
我今天去淡水人很多要用的應該是 I went to Tamsui today. There were a lot of people. 很多人真的就會說 There have been a lot of people. (X) 是錯誤的。現在完成式的 There have been 其實真的沒有那麼常用，有，不多，我講義的例子舉的都是一段期間，現在才發現沒講到另外一個 there have been 的用法可以表示剛剛發生，影響還在的這種現在完成式用法。比方說課本裡面舉的例子 There has been an accident. 有一場車禍。車禍剛剛發生，可能事故現在在處理中，或者因為這樣所以在塞車。昨天有一場車禍就會用 There was an accident yesterday. 那不能用 There is an accident. 嗎？知道大家可能會問，剛剛上網幫大家查了一下，有點小複雜，會這樣用是要跟其他部分相關，描述一個狀態的時候，有點難懂，可以先不要管，一般看到一場發生了的車禍的話通常 There has been an accident. ，現在完成式有時候真的蠻難解釋的，多去看很多相關的例子就會慢慢比較容易懂。

2 there was / there were 則是過去簡單式，表示過去的存在

Where are the eggs? There were five eggs in the fridge. 雞蛋在哪裡？冰箱原本有五顆雞蛋的。
3 there will be 則是未來，表示未來將會的存在
There will be heavy rain tomorrow. 明天將會有大雨。
There will be a lot of people at the meeting next week. 下星期的會議將會有很多人。
4 there has been / there have been 則是現在完成式的用法
There has never been anybody like you. 從來沒有人像你一樣。
There have been wars all through history. 在歷史上有很多的戰爭。

我覺得there have been 強調的是真的剛剛發生不久的事情,時間區間很短, 而過去簡單式there was,則是時間區間比較長的過去存在,比如今天描述昨天又或者前一個月的事情,這樣理解對嗎?
