【潔西家】超實用慣用語 idioms

潔西做影片每五個慣用語一支影片,目前做了二十隻,有一百個慣用語,後面還會繼續做下去,參考一本書 Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms,裡面有介紹慣用語的來源,潔西有特別選的多是蠻常見的,影片中從第十一個開始都有解釋來源,聽會更容易記住喔。

比方說 kick the bucket 踢桶子,指的是死掉,潔西本來就知道,但是原來這是從前吊死囚犯的時候會讓囚犯站在桶子上,把桶子踢掉,他們就被吊死了,也太恐怖。不過也很容易就把這個慣用語記住了吧?希望大家都能學到一些有用的東西 🙂

實用慣用語一 Idioms 

1 all thumbs 全都是拇指:笨手笨腳 

1 Jessie broke the cup again! She’s all thumbs.

1 潔西又打破杯子了。她真的是笨手笨腳。

2 play it by ear 用耳朵玩:見機行事

2 A: Where are we going this weekend?

2 A: 我們這個週末要去哪裡?

2 B: I don’t know. Let’s play it by ear.

3 get off someone’s back 從一個人的背下來:不要再批評某人,不要再煩某個人

4 get in someone’s hair 進入某人的頭髮:煩人

7 He claims that his wife cheated on him, but without evidence, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

8 pull someone’s leg 拉某人的腳,愚弄某人,跟某人說假的事情來開玩笑

11 all ears 都是耳朵,洗耳恭聽

11 A: I have something important to tell you. 我有重要的事情要跟你說。

11 B: I’m all ears. 我正洗耳恭聽。

12 the apple of someone’s eye 某人眼睛的蘋果,心肝寶貝

12 You’re the apple of my eye. 你是我的心肝寶貝。

13 back to square one 回到方格一,從頭開始

13 If this doesn’t work, we’re back to square one. 假如這樣做不行的話,我們就要從頭開始了。

14 backseat driver 後座駕駛者,愛指使別人做事的人,給人家不想要的忠告的人

14 I can cook some simple meals, but my sister always tries to be a backseat driver. 我會做一些簡單的料理,但是我姊姊總是要告訴我應該怎麼做。

16 be barking up the wrong tree 吠錯樹,找錯原因,用錯方法

16 I am not the person who spread those rumors about you. You are barking up the wrong tree. 我不是那個傳播那些關於你謠言的人。你找錯人了啦。

17 beat around the bush 繞著草叢打,不正面回答問題

17 Stop beating around the bush. Who was the woman you were talking to last night? 不要再逃避了。你昨天晚上跟她說話的那個女生是誰?

18 the black sheep of the family 家中的黑羊,最不成功,不討人喜歡的家庭成員

18 Susan’s the black sheep of the family. She’s always causing trouble. 蘇珊是家中最不討喜的人。她總是引起麻煩。

19 blessing in disguise 偽裝的祝福,原本看起來是不好的事,其實是好的

Being laid off was a blessing in disguise – within a month I got a much better job. 被資遣是以為是不好的其實很不錯,不到一個月我就找到更好的工作了。

20 the blind leading the blind 瞎子帶領著瞎子,不懂的人帶領不懂的人

I’ll try to help, but it’s the blind leading the blind because I’ve never done this before either. 我會試著幫忙,但是這就是不懂的人帶領不懂的人,我也從來都沒有做過這件事。

21 bring home the bacon 帶培根回家,養家糊口

21 I can’t sit around all day – someone’s got to bring home the bacon. 我不能整天坐著,必須要有人養家糊口。

22 bug someone 蟲蟲某人,煩某人,打擾某人

22 Stop bugging me and leave me alone! 不要再煩我,讓我一個人獨處。

23 bull in a china shop 在瓷器店的公牛,笨手笨腳的人,魯莽闖禍的人

23 He is like a bull in a china shop, a complete misfit in a museum. 他笨手笨腳的,完全不適合在博物館。

24 burn the candle at both ends 蠟燭兩頭燒,身心過勞,精疲力盡

24 Don’t work too hard. You’re burning the candle at both ends. 不要工作太累。你正在過度消耗自己。

26 burn your bridges behind you 把你身後的橋燒了,做了無法改變的決定

26 If you drop out of school now, you’ll be burning your bridges behind you. 假如你現在休學,你就沒有回頭路了。

27 bury the hatchet 埋斧頭,和好,不再吵架,結束戰爭

27 Stop fighting, and bury the hatchet. 不要再吵了,和好吧。

28 bury your head in the sand 把頭埋在沙裡,忽略假裝沒有看到的危險,逃避現實

28 You’ve got to face facts here – you can’t just bury your head in the sand.  你必須要面對現實,你不可以逃避現實。

29 butter someone up 奶油某個人,說好聽的話來要人家幫忙,諂媚

29 Maybe if you butter up the teacher, he’ll raise your final grade. 或許假如你諂媚一下老師,他會幫你的期末成績加分。

30 butterflies in the stomach 在胃裡的蝴蝶,緊張

30 I can’t talk in public without getting butterflies in my stomach. 我在大家面前說法沒有辦法不緊張。

31 call it a day 叫它一天,結束一天的工作,到此為止

31 You’ve been working all day. Why don’t you call it a day? 你一整天都在工作。不如就工作到這裡吧?

32 call the shots 叫射擊,給命令,做決定,作主

32 Who’s calling the shots here? 這裡誰作主?

33 calm before the storm 暴風雨前的寧靜,危機前的平和

33 The meeting may be peaceful now, but this is only the calm before the storm. 這個會議現在可能很平和,但是這只是暴風雨前的寧靜。

34 can’t see the forest for the trees 見樹不見林,只能看到小細節,看不到總體的狀況

36 catch someone red-handed 捉到一個人紅手,逮個正著,捉到正在做壞事的人

37 The plan failed after sponsors got cold feet. 那個計劃失敗了,在資助者失去自信後。

38 cold turkey 冷火雞,突然停止某個壞習慣或毒品

42 cry over spilled milk 為打翻的牛奶哭泣,對於發生的事感到傷心,後悔也來不及了

91 jump on the bandwagon 跳上樂隊馬車,指的是跟隨流行,順應潮流

91 The success of the product led many firms to try to jump on the wagon. 這個產品的成功導致很多公司都試著要跟著做。

92 jump the gun 跳槍,指的是過早行動,不成熟或匆促的舉止

92 I couldn’t wait to give my mother her Mother’s Day gift, so I jumped the gun and gave it to her a week early. 我不想要等待給我母親她的母親節禮物,所以我提早一個星期給她禮物。

93 keep something under your hat 把東西放在你的帽子下,指的是保持秘密

93 I’ll tell you who won the election, but you’ve got to keep the results under your hat. 我會跟你說誰贏得了選舉,但是你必須要把結果保持秘密。

96 kill two birds in one stone 用一顆石頭殺兩隻鳥,一石二鳥,指的是做一個行為完成兩件事

96 Cycling to work kills two birds with one stone. It saves money and gives you some exercise. 騎車上班是一石二鳥。不旦省錢,又可以做運動。

97 knock on wood 敲木頭,指的是一邊說一邊敲木頭用來避免壞運

97 So far, the new teacher doesn’t give too much homework. Knock on wood. 目前為止,新老是沒有給太多作業。敲木頭避免成真。

98 lay your cards on the table 把你的牌放在桌上,指的是攤牌,說出你的目的跟計畫

98 I thought it was time I laid my cards on the table, so I told him that I had no intention of marrying him. 我覺得是攤牌的時間到了,所以我跟他說我沒有想要嫁給他。

99 let sleeping dogs lie 讓睡覺的狗躺著,指的是不要無事生非,忘了過去的事

99 Don’t remind the director that you missed two rehearsals. Better to let sleeping dogs lie. 不要提醒導演你兩次預演沒來。他忘了就不要提醒他。

100 let the cat out of the bag 讓貓咪跑出袋子裡,指的是說出秘密

100 Carol’s little brother let the cat out of the bag about her surprise party. 卡羅的弟弟說出了她的驚喜派對的秘密。
