It’s really difficult to translate. Seriously, it’s not as easy as most people think. My niece is going to a fan party this coming Sunday. Her favorite voice actor is coming to the Animation Exhibition and I helped her to get one of the popular tickets which sold out in two minutes, so she can see her idol in person and get his signature. This week she asked me to write a fan letter in Japanese to her idol. he asked me to write a fan letter in Japanese. How about in English, I asked. No, she insisted the letter has to be in Japanese.
She finished writing it yesterday. Before I started to translated, I checked some Japanese websites about how to write a fan letter. Then I pick some useful phrases. After that I started to write it in Japanese. I found it was a bit different from what my niece wanted to express. I was tired, so I just put it away.
I wasn’t sure if my Japanese was good enough to write a fan letter in Japanese, so I told my niece that I would also write an English version and put it in the card, just in case I didn’t say it well in Japanese. This afternoon, I spent no more than five minutes to finish the letter in English. It wasn’t really not that difficult.
However, tonight when I started to write the Japanese version again, I spent like two hours or so. In the end, I just tried to express my niece’s words instead of what I intended to change to make it more … correct? For translation it’s more important to translate what the writer want to say instead of what the translator think would be better. This is a strange sentence, but I’m too lazy to correct it.
Anyway, just like that, I decided to translate whatever my niece wants to say instead of what I thought would be the right thing to say. While I was translating, I realized how bad my Japanese was. A lot of words I know how to say, but I cannot write them down and I don’t even know a good Japanese dictionary with a lot of examples.
Just like most people, I asked Google Translation’s help, but I would check the usage see if it was really the word I was looking for and check the examples and copy the usage. I tried to use easy, simple sentence patterns with some very common words to finish the letter. Perhaps the grammar wasn’t all correct, but I am sure the voice actor will understand what my niece is trying to say to him.
Perhaps I should start to write something in Japanese as well. It’s just I’m very bad at typing Japanese. I really find the way I use to write the letter is useful. That’s what I do when I have to write in English and I just applied it in Japanese. I’ve learned the basic Japanese sentence patterns and it’s not difficult if I can apply some of them and write a simple sentence. Most of my sentences are simple sentence, very few compound or complex sentences. But I think that’s enough if I am just learning it for fun for travel. Actually, it’s more fun to watch Japanese animations or dramas when you know the language knowing what it’s trying to say than just watching the translation. Hmm, just like how I write this.
Some students asked me if I had to translate Chinese to English then write it down or speak it out. No, I don’t have to, most of the time. I guess because I’m used to thinking in English and know the sentence patterns well. Sometimes I just found myself thinking in English with no reason. Practice makes perfect. Of course my English isn’t perfect, and I make mistakes from tie to time. However, it’s not difficult for me to write in English to express what I want to say.
Oh my goodness! It took me forever to write the short paragraph above. I tried to type it but in the end, I use voice to write down those words and made some adjustment. What I tried to say was: Although my Japanese is pretty bad, I would like to practice a little bit. Yesterday after I took medicine, I was still not able to sleep. I probably call Apple or leave a message at their page to ask about something which I totally forgot. I probably did that while I was sleeping. Today I got call from Apple, I picked up the phone and then hang up. It’s so embarrassing.

I was cooking noodles when suddenly everything went dark. Luckily, I had some candles. No one else was at home. I was a bit scared, but I finished cooking my meal. I had a not so romantic candlelight dinner.
While my girlfriend and I were watching a movie at home, the lights went out. It was really hot and boring, so we left home and took a walk in the moonlight. It was kind of romantic.
people only see what they want to see what they want to believe
somehow the mask is put on automatically when i see a familiar face
a fake smile? no one wants to see a crying face so i have to make my best effort to put up a smile
tired, so tired of everything, tired of explaining again and again to people who will never understand
not sure what i should do
sometimes i’m totally fine. the world isn’t perfect. i don’t have much but still i have family, friends. i have a place to live, i have a job, i have students who love me. i should be content?
emotions are totally out of control. tears just fall down for no reason. the empty feeling after getting together with friends i have no explanation.
nothing tastes good. nothing really makes me happy. day after day, just try to survive another day.
however, all the dark clouds disappear when i have a good day which unfortunately rarely happens. most of these days i get up on the wrong side of the bed and everything goes wrong.
every winter no exception the overwhelming sadness attacks me out of no where. blame on the weather?
nothing matters anymore. nothing bothers me actually. just don’t have the energy to pull myself together.
just like all those things i broke, even if i put every piece of myself together, it’s not the same, it’s still broken.
there are so many things i want to do but i just can’t do it. who would understand this nonsense?
am i too hard on myself or am i not trying hard enough? i’m not sure. if i push myself too hard, i know i wouldn’t like the result.
i guess the saddest thing is that i have no one to talk to about these feelings. everyone has their own problems and there’s really nothing they can do. besides, most of the time most people don’t understand. they judge, instead.
you are weak. you’re too greedy. you’re single, you have a job, and you have a place to stay. a lot of people have to worry about their children, their mortgage . some people don’t even have a place to live, not to say a job.
yeah, yeah, yeah. end of conversation. then they start to tell you how their lives are so much worse than yours.
just let out some feelings so i don’t go crazy. it’s winter. i was thinking that i should comfort my psychologist today when i go see him. poor guy. i bet he has to see much more patients and listens to endless complaints like mine. tough job. guess that’s why his clothes are always so colorful.
too bad i don’t have anything nice to wear to cheer myself up. in no mood for shopping, winter is definitely not my season. can i say that?
enough complaints. time to do what? not sure. make a cup of coffee? perhaps go to the bakery get some cake first? would love to have my own homemade cheese cake but too lazy. should bake some cake and cookies. having some delicious food is something at least i can do for myself. suddenly realize what “comfort food" means. ha ha.
i’m ok. could be better. have to find way to make it better. if i’m not happy then i’ll have to do something to change it. but what? don’t feel like doing anything.
i think i have been too blunt recently. i say what’s really in my mind, which annoys people and i feel bad after saying those things. but what does it make me if i can’t say what’s really in my mind. so difficult to live to be yourself to be honest with yourself.
enough is enough. coffee time

S + be + …: I am from Taipei. 我是台北人 New Yorker
現在簡單式 Be 的句型: 主詞+Be+名詞/形容詞/介系詞片語

S + am/is/are + not + noun/ adjective / preposition phrase
I am not a secretary. 我不是秘書。

She isn’t in good shape. 她不健康。
3. Yes/No 問句 : 英文句子疑問時要把助動詞放到主詞前面,be本身就是個助動詞。所以yes/no問句只要把be放在主詞前面就可以造問句
Am/Is/Are + S + noun/ adjective / preposition phrase

Are you worried? 你擔心嗎? Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
