過去進行式先很多人會用錯地方，稍微注意一下該什麼時候用，不要忘記be動詞，不要忘記用現在分詞，多做一些練習就會比較知道該什麼時候用喔。

過去進行式 Past Continuous/Past Progressive

一、使用時機

1 過去進行式用來表達一個活動在某個過去的時間點正在進行當中

Where were you doing at 11:00 last night? 

I was sleeping. I went to bed at 10:00. 

2 用 while 連接兩個過去進行式的句子可以用來表示兩個動作在過去的相同時間同時進行

While my father was watching TV, my mother was cooking. 

3 過去進行式強調動作的持續的期間，而非完成。過去簡單式強調動作的完成

I was reading a novel last night. 

I read a novel last night. 

4 過去進行式跟過去簡單式連用時可以用來表示一個正在進行的動作被另外一個動作打斷

a 過去進行式是先發生的，比較長的背景的動作或狀況

b 過去簡單式是比較短的動作，打斷過去進行式或發生在過去進行式的當中

c when 用來帶領過去簡單式，或用 while 來帶領過去進行式

At 7:00 this morning I was having a wonderful dream, but then the alarm clock went off. 

I saw Mike while I was walking to the bus station yesterday. He was walking his dog. 

I was crossing the street when the driver honked his horn.

He was speeding when the light turned red.

While he was speeding, the light turned red.

5 假如要表示一件事情發生，另外一件事接著發生，兩件事都用過去簡單式，假如是用 when 連接兩個過去簡單式的句子時，when 帶領的句子是先發生的動作。

When the light changed, I crossed the street. 

When the light changed, I was crossing the street. 

The light changed while I was crossing the street. 

6 非行為動詞不用在過去進行式

I tried the cake and see how it tasted. 

I didn’t know what it was. 

二、句型

1 肯定句：主詞＋was/were＋現在分詞

I was working./He was working./They were working.

2 否定句：主詞＋was/were＋not＋現在分詞

I was not working./He was not working./They were not working.

3 Yes/No 問句：Was/Were＋主詞＋現在分詞？

Was he working?/Were they working?

4 WH 問句：WH 疑問詞＋was/were＋主詞＋現在分詞？

What was he doing?/What were you doing?
